McMurry (Kap 10) - Mass, IR, UV spectrometry Flashcards
To determine the structure of an unknown organic compound, 4 different techniques are used:
1) Mass spectrometry
2) Infrared spectrometry
3) UV spectrometry
4) NMR spectrometry.
What is each used for?
1) Mass spectrometry is used to determine the size and formula of the compound.
2) Infrared spectrometry is used to determine which functional groups are present in the compound.
3) UV spectrometry is used to determine if there are any conjugated pi electrons in the system.
4) NMR spectrometry is used to determine the C-H framework.
