McGuffin et al ERQ Flashcards
1
Q
What can this study be used for?
A
Genetic inheritance
2
Q
Year
A
McGuffin et al (1996)
3
Q
Background
A
- Genetics is a scientific study of heredity
- Gene is a segment of DNA containing instructions for production of proteins which determine traits and behaviors
- Phenotype
- Gene expression
- In psychology, inheritance plays a role
- MZ twins, HZ twins
4
Q
Aim
A
Investigate contribution of genes as opposed to shared family environment to development of depression
5
Q
Participants
A
177 twins suffering from depression
6
Q
Experimental design
A
Correlational study
7
Q
Method
A
- Diagnostic assessment was carried out to asses levels of depression
- Twins were asked about how long they lived together, how friends and parents treated them to asses to what extent the environment was similar
8
Q
Results
A
- Concordance rate of over 40% for MZ twins
- 20% for DZ twins
- No significant relationship between the environment and concordance of depression
9
Q
Link to genes
A
- There is a strong genetic component to major depressive disorder, and no evidence for it being caused by a shared family environment.
