Q

Background

A
  • Suggested by Bartlett in 1932 book “remembering”
  • our brain structures and organises information in a form of schemas, which are units of knowledge formed by prior experiences.
  • Event schemas
  • Self schemas
  • Object schemas
  • Role schemas
  • that as we mature, schemas become more complexs and delicate, allowing access to more abstract and sophisticated concepts.
  • Assimilation (adjusting knowledge to fit schema)
  • Accommodation

Q

Procedure

A
  • Participants read a Native American story called “The war of ghosts” twice and had to recall it in as much detail as possible
  • One group was asked to use repeated reproduction: recall the story after a short time and then on a later date
  • Another was asked to use serial reproduction: tell the story to another person
  • This was done to expose participants to unknown type of story which didn’t fit the schema of english literature

Q

Results

A
  • Leveling: story was recalled in much shorter length
  • Assimilation: story became more consistent, fit the schema of a regular British story
  • Sharpening: order of story changed as participants tried to make sense of it
