Q

Background

A
  • Proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968
  • Encoding, duration, capacity
  • Sensory memory -> attention
  • Short term memory (mainly auditory, 18s)
  • GA Miller 7 chunks in STM
  • > rehearsal
  • Long term memory (unlimited capacity, duration)

Q

Procedure

A
  • Asked to recall 15 word list
  • Three conditions: immediate recall, delayed recall after 10 and 30 seconds
  • In delay conditions participants were asked to count from a given number until given permission to write

Q

Results

A
  • In immediate recall, recency and primacy effects were shown
  • in 30 seconds condition the effect disappeared

Q

Explanation for results using MSMM

A
  • Evidence for existence of STM and LTM, because when people have a chance to rehearse, the primacy effect retains
  • Without rehearsal information is displaced, not transferring to LTM

Q

Evaluation

A

+ Well controlled experiment, IV/DV relationship clear

  • Only male participants were used
  • Low ecological validity, because people don’t usually memorise item lists, unless phone numbers or shopping lists
