Glanzer and Cunitz Flashcards
1
Q
What can this study be used for?
A
Multi-store memory model (atkinson and shiffrin 1968)
2
Q
Background
A
- Proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin 1968
- Encoding, duration, capacity
- Sensory memory -> attention
- Short term memory (mainly auditory, 18s)
- GA Miller 7 chunks in STM
- > rehearsal
- Long term memory (unlimited capacity, duration)
3
Q
Year
A
Glanzer and Kunitz (1966)
4
Q
Aim
A
Determine STM and LTM as separate memory stores
5
Q
Participants
A
46 army enlisted men
6
Q
Experimental design
A
Independent measures design
7
Q
Procedure
A
- Asked to recall 15 word list
- Three conditions: immediate recall, delayed recall after 10 and 30 seconds
- In delay conditions participants were asked to count from a given number until given permission to write
8
Q
Results
A
- In immediate recall, recency and primacy effects were shown
- in 30 seconds condition the effect disappeared
9
Q
Explanation for results using MSMM
A
- Evidence for existence of STM and LTM, because when people have a chance to rehearse, the primacy effect retains
- Without rehearsal information is displaced, not transferring to LTM
10
Q
Evaluation
A
+ Well controlled experiment, IV/DV relationship clear
- Only male participants were used
- Low ecological validity, because people don’t usually memorise item lists, unless phone numbers or shopping lists
