Crockett et al ERQ Flashcards
What can this study be used for?
Neurotransmission
Background
Year
2010
Aim
To investigate the effect of serotonin on prosocial behaviour
Participants
30 healthy volunteers
Experimental design
Repeated measures design; experiment
Procedure
IN CONDITION 1 participants were given citalopram (SSRI)
IN CONDITION 2 they were given a placebo
Particpants were asked to solve the trolley problem where a train is moving along the tracks and is about to kill five people; you either interfere or do nothing
-In impersonal scenarios interferance meant pulling a lever that’d turn onto another track where it’d kill 1 person
- In personal scenarios interfering meant pushing a man onto the track so that the body will slow down the train and prevent hitting the people
Results
- In impersonal scenario citalopram didn’t effect behavior
- In personal scenario citalopram made people less likely to interfere
Evaluation
☑️ Counterbalanced
☑️ Double-blind - avoiding researcher bias
🚫 Low ecological validity
🚫 Emotional distress
