Background

A
  • Dual processing model by Daniel Kahneman 2003
  • Heuristics
  • System 1 - fast thinking
  • System 2 - thorough thinking
  • Used by marketing specialists

Q

Procedure

A
  • Participants took cognitive reflections test, which measures whether people use fast thinking and answer the question (and get it wrong) or use slow thinking (and get it right)
  • Half students took the test in hard-to-read font while the others had it in easy-to-read font

Results

A
  • Hard to read font participants were correct 65% of the time
  • only 10% of easy-to-read participants got all 3 questions correct

Q

Explanation in terms of dual process model

A
  • Difficult to read participants used system 2 thinking thus answered correctly
  • When easy-to-read font is used, system one automatically comes up with a quick, but incorrect answer

Q

Criticism

A
  • Strong evidence for dual processing model
  • University students don’t represent the population
  • CRT uses ‘trick’ questions, so low ecological validity
  • Easy to replicate
