Bandura et al Flashcards
What can this study be used for?
Social cognitive theory, individual and the group ethics
Background
- Social cognitive theory started as social learning theory in 1960s by Bandura
- Explains learning as a produc of individual’s interaction with the enviroment
- Reciprocal determinism
- Attention
- Retention
- Motivation
- Self efficacy
Year
Bandura (1961)
Aim
Test how observing an adult behaving aggressively towards an inflatable doll influences children’s subsequent behaviour
Participants
72 children of ages 3-6
Experimental design
Laboratory experiment using matched pairs design
Procedure
- Children were allocated into groups based on their levels of aggression
- There were three major conditions: control group, group exposed to aggressive model and group exposed to passive model
- In the aggressive model, kids observed an adult behaving physically with the doll. Aggression was both physical and verbal.
- In the passive group, the model was playing with blocks in the room quietly, not interacting with the doll.
- The control group had no model
Results
- Exposure of children to aggressive model increased the frequency of aggressive behaviour
- Children were more likely to imitate behaviour of same-sex model
Connection to SCL
Evaluation
+ matched pairs design allows to reduce aggression variation between participants
+ high internal validity
+ external validity high since the sample was quite big
+ no order effects
- ethical considerations (using underage participants, protection from harm, deception, confidentiality, withdrawal)
