maxwell boltzmann Flashcards
What is the maxwell boltzmann curve?
The Boltzmann curve shows the distribution of molecular energies in a (g)ass at a constant temperature .
Some molecule :
Move fast and have high energy
Move slow and have low energy
what do a majority of molecules have?
Average energy
What are some features of the curve?
The area under the curve is equal to the total number of molecules in the sample,
the curve starts at the origin [ there are no molecules in the system with zero energy]
Only molecules with an energy greater than the activation energy , Ea, can react.
What are some facts about the Boltzmann curve with the variable of temperature?
At higher temperatures the KE of molecules increases.
The peak moves when the temperature is higher:
To the right and is a lower peak.
The area under the curve remains the same and the number of molecules in the system remains the same.
What happens to molecules when a higher temperature is introduced?
[ and also how does this affect the curve]
- the molecules move faster as they have more KE
- a greater proportion of molecules have an energy that is greater than the activation energy.
- more successful collisions occur in a given length of time.
- ## the rate of reaction increases
What does the curve do with the prescence of a catalyst
Catalysts lower the activation energy of a reaction.
They do this by providing an alternative reaction pathway which requires a lower activation energy .
The addition of the catalyst doesn’t change the distribution of the molecular energies.
More molecules in the system have an energy in excess of the new lower activation energy. More successful collisions occur in a given length of time and the rate of reaction increases.
