Halogenoalkanes Flashcards
What are haloalkanes?
They are saturated compounds that contain carbon atom(s) and at least one halogen atom
How do we classify haloalkanes
This is done according to the number of alkyl groups attached to the c atom bonded to the halogen atom
There are :
primary haloalkanes : one alkyl group
Secondary haloalkanes : two alkyl groups
Tertiary haloalkanes : 3 alkyl groups
What is the shortened formula of a primary haloalkane ?
RX
What is the shortened formula of a secondary haloalkane?
R2CHX
What is the shortened formula for tertiary haloalkanes?
R3CX
What are some examples of primary, secondary and tertiary haloalkanes?
Primary : chloroethane
Secondary: 2bromopropane
Tertiary : 2iodo2methyl propane
What is the difference in electro negativity between carbon and the halogens
As the difference in electro negativity is significant , the C-X bond is polar so the electrons in the covalent bond are held closer to the halogen atom (and the bond is polar )
State whether or not the following haloalkanes are primary or secondary :
Chloroethane
2-bromo-2-methyl butane
3-chloro-2-ethyl hexane
Chloroethane : primary
2-bromo-2-methyl butane: tertiary
3-chloro-2-ethyl hexane :secondary
