haber cycles Flashcards
Why do we need born-Haber cycles?
We cannot measure the lattice enthrall directly as it is not possible to form one mole of ionic solid from gaseous ions in practice. Instead we use a type of hess’s cycle where we can experimentally measure another path between the gaseous ions and the ionic lattice
What does hess’ law say that is important to this topic?
It doesn’t matter which direction you take, the total energy changes are the same
What is the generic born-haber cycle?
As we are interested in the energy released when 1 mole of ionic solid forms gaseous ions :
X+Y=XY
The enthalpy change would be delta LE H standard as one mole is being formed? (It’s exothermic)
Watch the video it makes more sense
