MATERNAL NURSING Flashcards
primary goal of both maternal and child health nursing
promotion and maintenance of optimal family health to ensure cycles of optimal childbearing and childrearing
care of women during childbirth; obstare “to keep watch.”
Obstetrics
derived from the Greek word pais,
meaning “child.”
Pediatrics
range of services and care that may be provided by a nurse based on
state requirements
scope of practice
the 6 weeks after childbirth, sometimes termed the fourth trimester of pregnancy
puerperium
6 weeks before conception to 6 weeks after birth
perinatal period
Educating clients to be aware of good health through teaching and role
modelling
HEALTH PROMOTION
Intervening to maintain health when risk of illness is present
HEALTH MAINTENANCE
Diagnosing and treating illness using interventions that will return
client to wellness fast
HEALTH RESTORATION
Preventing further complications from an illness, bringing client back
to an optimal state of wellness, helping client accept inevitable death
HEALTH REHABILITATION
a form of problem solving based on the scientific method, serves as the basis
for assessing, making a nursing diagnosis, planning, organizing, and evaluating care
Nursing Process
conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best
evidence in making decisions about the care of patients
Evidence-Based Practice
controlled investigation of
problems that have implications for nursing practice, provides evidence for practice and justification for implementing activities for outcome achievement, ultimately resulting in
improved and cost-effective patient care.
Nursing research
measures how fast people are added to the population through births
Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
CBR = Number of registered life births in a year/Midyear population x 1,000
segment of the population deemed to be capable of giving birth (15 - 44)
General Fertility Rate (GFR)
GFR = Number of registered live births in a year/Midyear population of women 15-44 years of age x 1,000
number of deaths of a female from any cause related to or aggravated by pregnancy and childbirth or within 42 days of termination of
pregnancy,
Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR)
MMR = Number of deaths due to pregnancy, delivery, puerperium in a calendar year/Number of life births in the same year x 100
number of deaths of infants under one year of age in a calendar year per one thousand live births in the same period.
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)
IMR = Deaths under 1 year of age in a calendar year/Number of live births in the same year x 1,000
deaths of infants less than 28 days old are due mainly to prenatal or genetic factors.
Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR)
NMR = Number of deaths among those under 28 days of age in a calendar year/Number of live births in the same year x 1,000
deaths among infants 28 days to less than 1 year of age in a calendar year. This is influenced by environmental and nutritional factors as
well as infection.
Post neonatal Mortality Rate (PMR)
PNR = Number of deaths among those 28 days to less than 1 year of age in a calendar year/Number of live births in the same year x 1,000
