Materialism Flashcards
Materialism
Only one substance, mind is part of the physical world. ‘Matter’ is a flexible concept so leaves a lot of possibilities. Main problem: if all is physical, why is consciousness so hard to explain.
Folk psychology
Collection of beliefs people have about psychology, without attempting to verify or test.
Eliminative psychology
Churchland. Eliminates mental states, logical reasoning doesn’t exist and Folk psych is dangerous. Called them naive physicist
Reductive materialism
Don’t eliminate mental states, but we must account for how they are rooted in the brain. Every mental state has different brain state. Higher order is explained by lower levels.
Non-reductive materialism
Approach that believes all is material, but accounts for neural plasticity and individual difference by accepting that a brain state can lead to multiple mental states. (multiple realisability)
