Dualism and free will Flashcards
Mind
Faculties humans have to perceive, feel, think, remember and want
Dualism
Believing theres two things, immaterial and material. Oldest and most intuitive. It puts conscious information processing at the centre.
Mind-body problem
Humans tend to think that the mind arises from the brain, but is more than just the brain itself (Chalmers). This is bc conscious information processing gives us a feeling of being in control. But we can’t explain how the mind is linked to the body
Consciousness
Thoughts, beliefs, desires etc that we are aware of. Our ‘I’, and the hardest problem in psychology
Free will
Situation in which you can choose action:
- Must be able to do otherwise (not necessary)
- Act must originate in agent, not an external force (intention is cause of the act)
- Intention of behaviour precedes behaviour
