Mastitis Flashcards
a SCC count indicating inflammation:
SCC count for determining an affected quarter is:
> 100,000
> 200,000
briefly explain how a CMT test works
the reagent causes cell lysis and causes the milk to become gel-like. score form 0-3, and a score of 0 means the SCC is below 200,000
with subclinical mastitis, electrical conductivity ________
increases (more Na Cl, less K)
what pathogens cause contagious mastitis?
staph aureus, strep agalactiae
corynebacrtium bovis, mycoplasma spp
you are consulting with a farmer whose cows have mastitis. you obtained milk cultures and found strep agalactiae present. the farmer wants to know how to treat the cows and how to reduce this in his herd. you say…
this is a contagious pathogen and is therfore spread via the milking equipment
treat all dry cows with intramammary antibiotics
Prevention:
use POST MILKING DIP (anything that got on the cow from being milked will die). have milkers wear gloves, milk heifers before cows, milk sick animals last/separately
if a cow is infected with these contagious pathogens causing mastitis, they are often culled
staph aureus and mycoplasma spp
list some environmental pathogens that cause mastitis
coliform, staph uberus and dysgalactiae,
which mastitis pathogen can be both contagious and environmental
coagulase positive staph like staph hyicus and staph epidermidis
how is environmental mastitis best controlled?
removing manure, using clean bedding and cleaning it often, use sand bedding and not hay or wood, PRE MILKING DIP, intramammary dry cow antibiotics + teat sealant
wood bedding/shavings predisposes to what
klebsiella mastitis
