what are some risk factors for abaomasal ulcers in cows?
A
stress (epi and norepi)
decreased mucosal blood flow either via NSAIDs or shock
sepsis from gram neg bacteria like e coli
increased gastrin or histamine release

what are the 4 clinical presentations for abomasal ulcers
A
- non perforating, mild bleeding
- non perforating, significant bleeding
- slowly perforate and adheres to peritoneum, like TRP
- rapid periforation and peritonitis, shock, death

clinical signs of a bleeding abomasal ulcer include
A
melena, pale mucus membranes, tachycardia, weakness, death

how are abomasal ulcers treated?
A
H2 antagonists like ranitidine, omeprazole, bland diet (hay), blood transfusion (as long as there’s no lymphosarcoma)
if with ahdesions + perforation, treat like TRP and give antibiotics
if perforated and no adhesions, emergency surgery
