what causes pink eye in cattle?
moraxella bovis (sometimes chalmydia, bovine herpesvirus, mycoplasma)
what is the biggest factor regarding transmission of bovine pink eye
environmental factors:
excessive sunlight: lack of pigment around the eye making the eye sensitive
Flies: house fly (musca domestica) and face fly
Dust & plant material: irritants in air, plant awns, etc
besdies conjunctivitis, what ocular lesions is often present with pinkeye?
central corneal ulcer
IBK is more commonly seen in what time of year
summer and fall (more flies)
clinical signs of IBK include
YOUNG CATTLE usually, conjunctivitis, blepharospasm, epiphora, central corneal ulcer, blindness due to ulcer, decreased milk production,
what diagnostic could you do to confirm a diagnosis of IBK?
conjunctival swab +/- lacrimal secretion for culture
how can IBK be treated?
systemic oxytetracycline most commonly
others: ceftiofur injection, penicillin, florfenicol, tulathromycin
how is IBK prevented?
reduce flies and environmental irritants, breed for pigment around the eyes, be sure to vaccinate for BVD and IBR
