Massage Research Base Flashcards
evidence based practice
Conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.
4 steps of evidence based practice
- Formulate a clear clinical question, usually from a patient’s problem
- Search the literature for relevant research articles – prioritise highest levels of evidence
- Evaluate (critically appraise) the evidence for its validity and usefulness
- Does the research apply to your pt’s problem? - Integrate useful findings into clinical practice
levels of evidence
SYSTEMATIC REVIEW & META-ANALYSIS
RANDOMISED CONTROLLED TRIAL (RCT)
NONRANDOMISED TRIALS COHORT STUDIES

examples of strong evidence
consistent findings in multiple high quality RCTs

single, high quality RCT or consistent findings in multiple low quality trials
examples of limited evidence
single low quality randomised trial
examples of unclear evidence
- denoted inconsistent or contradictory results in multiple randomised trials
