Management of Cognitive and Behavioral Issues Flashcards
What IQ is associated with intellectual disorders, and why do they underestimate ability?
less than 70-75, underestimate due to cultural bias, expect child to have good UE function, and good vision and attention
What is the relationship between a child with ID and how they explore the environment?
If they have ID or physical disabilities, they might explore the environment LESS which can affect how they are able to develop if they are not interested in exploring the environment (development of crawling for example)
Describe some ways impaired learning capabilities affect learning ability?
child will learn fewer things
need more repetition
difficulty generalizing skills
don’t maintain skills without practice
slower response time
small repertoire of responses
What type of approach is most commonly used now for treating children with ID?
top-down approach (start with desired outcome/goal and work down to intervention plan and strategies)
What standardized tests can be used for activity limitations of ID?
GMFM (CP and DS only)
PEDI
SFA
What standardized tests can be used for participation in ID?
CAPE, PAC, PEDI, SFA
T/F, you want to move the child with ID as much as possible in therapy
false, you want the child to SELF move with activities given in the session
T/F, you want to instruct a child with ID in their natural environment
true, even though it might have more distractions, but it is needed in order to help them transfer their therapy skills in real life
Describe things you have to use in behavioral programming when treating a child?
positive reinforcement, antecedent techniques, shaping or chaining
What are the types of chaining?
forward and reverse
How do you prevent unwanted behaviors?
make sure basic needs are met (eat, bathroom), don’t give choices that don’t exist and only give 2 concrete choices if possible, limit distractions and sensory problems, be sure child can communicate with you, allow sufficient response time after request, make it fun and specific to the child’s interests.
How do you address unwanted behaviors?
ignore, distract, redirect, confront, replace with other socially acceptable behavior DO NOT JUST PUT IN TIME OUT
