Male Reproductive System - Duct System Flashcards
What structures form the duct system of the MRS?
Epididymis
Vas Deferens
Urethra
Location of epididymis
Superior part of the testis and along the posterior lateral side
Functions of the epididymis
Mature and store sperm cells
Expels sperm with the contraction of muscles
Parts of the testes
Upper part: Head (Contain highly coiled efferent ductules)
Middle part: Body (Contain a single duct of epididymis)
Lower part: Tail (Contain single duct of epididymis)
Lower part becomes continuous with the vas deferens
What artery is supplies the epididymis and duct ?
Testicular artery
Nerve supply of the epididymis
Testicular plexus derived from T11 to L1
Characteristics of the vas deferens
Carries sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
Passes over the bladder
Moves sperm by peristalsis
Ends in the ejaculatory duct which unites with the urethra
Expanded end is called the ampulla
What are the parts of the ductus deferens?
External
Internal
Course of the external part of ductus deferens
Starts at lower pole of testis as continuation of the epididymis (within the spermatic cord)
Moves through inguinal canal
Inguinal canal is a suitable site for vasectomy
Course of the internal part of the vas deferens
Runs along lateral wall of pelvis
Continues along base of urinary bladder
Joined by the seminal vesicle to form ejaculatory duct which empties into prostatic urethra
Extent of urethra
Base of urinary bladder to tip of penis
Regions of the urethra
Prostatic
Membranous
Spongy/penile/bulbous
