Male Reproductive System - Accessory Organs Flashcards
What are the accessory organs of the male reproductive system?
Seminal vesicles
Prostate
Bulbourethral gland
What are the seminal vesicles?
Blind-ending, coiled and sacculated tube on both sides
Sites of the seminal vesicles?
It lies behind the base of the urinary bladder.
It unites with the ductus deferens near the base of the prostate to form the ejaculatory duct
Secretions of the seminal vesicle
Secretions contain fructose and prostaglandins
Neutralizes vaginal acidity
Location of the prostate gland
Surrounds and opens into the urethra where it leaves the bladder
What are the secretions of the prostate gland?
Alkaline fluid which activates sperm preventing them from sticking together
Surfaces of prostate gland
Base (Superiorly)
Apex (Inferiorly)
Anterior Surface
Posterior Surface
Inferolateral Surface
Relations of the base of the prostate
Attached to neck of urinary bladder
Relations of the apex of the prostate
Rests on urogenital diaphragm
Relations of the anterior surface of the prostate
Lies 2cm behind pubic symphysis
Upper part connected to the pubic bones by puboprostatic ligaments
Lower end is pierced by the urethra
Relations of the posterior surface of the prostate
Separated from rectum by fascia of Denonvilliers
Near the upper border it is pierced by the ejaculatory duct
Relations of inferolateral surface of prostate
Side walls of pelvis
Lateral relations of the prostate gland
Medial margins of levator ani muscles
What is the true capsule of the prostate?
Formed by condensation of the peripheral part of the gland
Fibromuscular in structure and is continuous with stroma of the gland
What is the false capsule of the prostate?
Lies outside the true capsule
Derived from the endopelvic fascia
Location of the prostatic venous plexus of the true capsule
Embedded between the true and false capsule
Ligaments of the prostatic capsule
Medial pair lies near the apex
Lateral pair is close to the base
How many lobes does the prostatic gland contain?
5 lobes
What are the lobes of the prostatic gland?
Anterior (isthmus): Anterior to urethra
Posterior: Posterior to urethra and inferior to ejaculatory ducts
Two lateral: On each side of urethra
Middle (median): Between urethra and ejaculatory ducts
Arterial supply of prostate
Branches from inferior vesical, middle rectal and internal pudendal arteries
Venous drainage of prostate
Prostatic venous plexus which drains into internal iliac veins
Lymphatic drainage of prostate
Internal iliac lymph nodes
Nerve supply of prostate
Prostatic plexus of nerves derived from the lower part of the inferior hypogastric plexus
What are the bulbourethral glands?
Paired, pea shaped glands
Location of the bulbourethral glands?
Within urogenital diaphragm
Found on each side of membranous urethra
Where does the contents of the duct drain?
Spongy urethra
Secretions of the bulbourethral gland
Clear, viscour mucis which wash the urethra from acidic urine
