Q

Components

Female reproduction

A
  • Ovary: female reproductive glands
  • Ovarioles: Basic unit of egg production
  • Lateral oviducts: Receive mature oocytes (eggs) from ovarioles
  • Common oviduct: Intersection of lateral oviducts
  • Gonopore: Connects common oviduct to genital chamber
  • Vagina (genital chamber): Receives male genitalia during copulation
  • Vulva (ovipore): External opening of the vagina

Q

Egg production

A
  • Occurs in the ovarioles which contains eggs in progressive stages of maturation
  • Number of ovarioles varies depending on the taxon, its size, and lifestyle

Q

Fertilization

female reproduction

A
  • Female controls liberation of sperm – synchronous with egg movement in oviduct
  • Sperm enters egg through the micropyle (openings in the eggshell)

Q

Accessory gland functions

Female reproduction

A
  • Secrete material to glue or cement eggs to the substrate
  • Secrete protective coating on the eggs (egg capsule, ootheca, etc.)
  • Secrete silken stalk in lacewing
  • Act as poison gland in many Hymenoptera

Components

Male reproduction

A
  • Testes: male reproductive gland
  • Sperm tubes: Basic unit of sperm production
  • Vas deferens: Expands to form seminal vesicles, join to form ejaculatory duct
  • Seminal vesicles: Sperm storage organ
  • Ejaculatory ducts: Transport sperm to gonopore
  • Gonopore: Transports sperm to aedeagus
  • Aedeagus: male copulatory organ

Q

Accessory glands functions

Male reproduction

A
  • Seminal fluid: Nourish and serve as carrier/activator of spermatozoa
  • Female behaviour: egg prod. & oviposition, decrease receptivity to other males
  • Mating plug: Prevents loss of sperm and further mating
  • Spermatophore: A special structure enclosing sperm in some insects
