Digestive and Excretory System Flashcards
1
Q
Type of system
A
Complete digestive system
2
Q
Divisions
A
Divided into 3 sections
* Foregut: Ingestion, temporary storage and grinding
* Midgut: Production and secretion of digestive enzymes
* Hindgut: Absorption of water, salts and other molecules, excretion
3
Q
Foregut
A
- Pharynx:
- Esophagus:
- Crop: Food storage
- Proventriculus: Grinding organ (in insects that feed on solid food)
4
Q
Midgut
A
- Gastric caecum: Provides extra SA for secretion & absorption
- Ventriculus: Primary site for enzymatic digestion & absorption
- Peritrophic membrane: Protects digestive cells
5
Q
Hindgut
A
- Ileum/colon/rectum: Regulate absorption of water and salts from waste products. 90% of water removed before it passes through anu
- Anus
- Malpighian Tubes: Remove nitrogenous waste from hemolymph
6
Q
Saliva
A
- From salivary glands (labial glands)
- Produces digestive enzymes, anticoagulants (blood feeders)
