Humans - muliply in liver and then RBCs

What is the Plasmodium life cycle?
Sprozoite –> Schizont –> Merozoite
What are the disease states of malaria?
Primary - first clinical episode following sporozoite inoculation
Relapse - release of blood stage parasites from a liver stage
Recrudesence - persistent bloodstream infection
What are the symptoms of clinical malaria?
Flue-like symptoms but worse
Anemia and associated symptoms
History of travel
What organism causes cerebral malaria?
P. falciparum
Causes end-organ failure
What are the signs/symptoms of cerebral malaria?
Prostration, impaired consciousness
Convulsions, jaundice
Pulmonary edema/hypotension
How is malaria diagnosed?
Microscopy - thick/thin films
Rapid diagnostic antigen tests - Binax NOW
PCR
What are the treatments for malaria?
Chloroquine
Malarone - Atovaquone/proguanil
Artemether-lumefantein (LA)
Mefloquine (Larum)
What are the prophylactic therapies for malaria?
Malarone
Mefloquine
Doxycyline
Primaquine
What are the protective factors against malaria?
Sickle cell trait
Duffy-negative blood type
Immunity
What groups are at risk for malaria?
Children
