Major Skeletol Structure Flashcards
Axial Skeleton
Can be thought of as the “trunk” of the body, as it encompasses the head and torso. More specifically, the axial skeleton refers to the skull, the bones around the thoracic cavity, and the spinal cord.
The skull protects the brain and the upper airway. The bones that make up the skull can be split into two categories called the
the CRANIAL BONES, referred to collectively as the cranium, and the FACIAL BONES. The cranium is made up of plates fused together to form the top of the skull
Cranial bones
Frontal bone
Parietal bone
Temporal bone
Occipital bone
The frontal bone is the
is the plate that makes up the forehead
The parietal bones make up the
very top of the skull, and there are two, one on the left and one on the right.
The temporal bones lie behind the
ears and make up the lower side of the skull. Like the parietal bones, there is one on each side of the skull.
The occipital bone makes up the
Base of the skull ( located in the back, below)
Facial bones
Maxilla
Mandible
Zygomatic
The maxilla is the
upper jaw. The bones
that make up the maxilla are fused to the rest of the skull.
The mandible is the
lower jaw which, unlike the fixed maxilla, is attached to joints that allow it to move.
The zygomatic bones are more commonly referred to as
the cheek bones and lie above the upper jaw
