Epic poetry

Epistolary poems
Poems that are written and read as letters
Ballad
Follow a rhyme scheme and meter in focus on subjects such as love, death, and religion. Many tell stories, and several modern ballads are put to music.
Elegies
Morning poems using three parts:
Lament
praise of the deceased
Solis for the loss
Odes
Evolved from songs to the typical poem of the romantic time. Expressing strong feelings and contemplative thoughts.
Pastoral poems
Idealize nature and country living
Epigrams
Memorable rhymes with one or two lines
Limericks
Two lines of iambic dimeter followed by two lines of iambic dimeter in another of iambic trimeter
Haiku
5/7/5 = 17 syllables
Sonnets
14 lines of iambic pentameter tightly organized around a theme
