Mystery
Stories with plots that follow a protagonist as they work to solve an unexplained situation, such as a murder, disappearance, or robbery.
Science fiction
Science fiction exaggerates
Based on the manipulation, an exaggeration of real scientific discoveries and processes.
Fantasy
Harry Potter
Stories that feature imaginary characters and supernatural abilities, but often take place in settings that resemble real places and cultures in history.
Realistic fiction
John Green, “holes”
Describes fictional narrative that include events in characters that do not exist, but could appear in reality.
Historical fiction
“The help, the book thief”
Works that take place in the past and model their setting after real historical cultures, societies, and time periods. These works may include real historical figures in advance, but they also may not.
Literary nonfiction
Night by Elie Wiesel (the holocaust)
Describes non-fiction narratives that present true facts, and events in a way that entertains readers and displays creativity.
Realism
Realism = real reality
The adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Goal of representing reality as fiercely as possible. Some techniques include writing in vernacular (conversational language), using specific dialect, and placing emphasis on character rather than plot. Often addresses ethical issues.
Satire
1984 – burning of books by firefighters is exaggerated
Using sarcasm, irony, and humor and social criticism to lampoon human folly. Often involves creating situations or ideas to deliberately exaggerate reality to appear ridiculous to illuminate flawed behaviors.
