Magnetic Compass Flashcards
1
Q
How does a magnetic compass work?
A
Magnetized needled attached to a float assembly around which is mounted a compass card, they align themselves parallel to the earth’s lines of magnetic force. The float assembly is housed in a bowl filled with acid free white kerosene
2
Q
Limitations?
A
It will rotate and tilt up to approx. 18 degree angle of bank. At steeper banks the compass indications are erratic and unpredictible
3
Q
Various errors
A
oscillation - erratic movement of the card caused by turbulence or rough control technique
deviation - deu to electrical and magnetic distrubances in the aircraft
variation - angular diff between true and magnetic north
acceleration error - on e/w headings while accelerating, the compas shows a turn to the N and when decelerating to the S Accelerate North Decelerate South
Northerly turning error - the compass leads in the south half of a turn and lags in the north half a turn Undershoot North Overshoot South
