Aeronautical Info Manual Flashcards
What type of lighting is a VASI?
visual approach slide indicator - lights arracnged to provide visual descent guidance during the approach to a runway.
Basic principle is the difference in color of the lights (red vs white)
red over red, too low
red over white, just right
white over white, too high
What is a PAPI?
precision approach path indicator.
similar to a VASI but lights are in a single row of 2 or 4.
4 white (high, more than 3.5 degrees)
3 white 1 red (slightly high, 3.2 degrees)
2 & 2 (good)
1 white 3 red (slightly low, 2.8 degrees)
four red (low, less than 2.5 degrees)
What does the operation of a rotating beacon during the day indicate?
in class B, C, D, and E surface areas it indicates ground visibility of less than 3 miles and/or the ceiling is less than 1000 feet.
What are the six types of signs installed at airports?
mandatory instruction - red background/white inscription. denotes a runway entrance, critical area, or prohibited area.
location sign - black background/yellow inscription. denotes a taxiway, or runway location, the boundary of a runway, or an ILS critical area
direction sign - yellow background/black inscription. denotes intersecting taxiway(s) leading out of an intersection to turn onto or hold short of.
destination sign - yellow background/black inscription. contains arrows. provides info on locating runways, terminals, cargo areas, and civial aviation areas, etc
info sign - yellow background/black inscription. provides info on areas that can’t be seen from the control tower, applicable radio frequencies, and noise abatement procedures
runway distance remaining sign - black background white inscription. distance remaining on runway in thousands of feet
What color are runway markings? taxiway?
runways are white. taxiways are yellow
What airport marking aids will be used to indicate the following?
runway threshold markings - longitudinal stripes of uniform dimensions. Helps identify the beginning of the runway available for landing.
displaced threshold - area not available for landing, but available for takeoffs. A white 10 foot wide threshold bar is located across the width of the runway at the displaced threshold. White arrows are located along the centerline in the area between the beginning of the runway and the DT.
Runway hold position markings - for taxiways, these markings identify where you must stop when clearance has not been issued to proceed onto the runway. Generally also identify the boundary of the runway safety area for aircraft exiting the runway. 4 yellow lines, two solid and two dashed, the width of the taxi/runway
temporarily closed runways and taxiways
provides a visual indication that taxi or runway is closed. yellow crosses are placed on the runway only at teach end. Closed taxiways are blocked with barricades or a yellow cross at the entrance.
Permanently closed runway and taxiway
lighting is disconnected. markings are obliterated. Yellow crosses at each end.
How do you determine the correct traffic pattern without a control tower?
with a full or part time unicom, an advisory may be obtained which will usually include wind direction and velocity, favored or designated runway, right/left traffic, altimeter setting, known traffic, NOTAMS, etc.
many no provide automated weather, radiocheck capability, and advisory info. The UNICOM is in the chart supplement and approach charts
without unicom, a segmented circle visual indicator system if installed. Shows the wind direction indicator in the middle, the landing direction indicator, landing strip indicators, and traffic pattern indicators
what is an ARTCC and what useful service can it provide to VFR flights?
Air Route Traffic Control Center - provides traffic control service primarily to aircraft operating on IFR flight plans within controlled airspace and principally during the en route phase of flight
They have radar and if you have the right equipment, they can provide VFR flight following.
Transponder codes?
1200 - VFR
7500 - hijack
7600 - comms failure
7700 - emergency
