Magnesium Sulfate Flashcards
Magnesium Sulfate action?
-activates intracellular enzyme activity, binds messenger RNA to ribosomes
-essential for neuromuscular function, muscle contraction, cardiac function
Magnesium Sulfate Therapeutic Uses?
-treat and prevent hypomagnesemia
- prevent and teat low magnesium levels
-can be used as a laxative
- IV MG is used to stop pre term labor
-Used in eclampsia ( to prevent seizures) for pregnant pt,
-prevent cardiac arrhythmias
-used for malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, diarrhea, and diuretic therapy
Magnesium Sulfate complications?
-Muscle weakness
-painful muscle contraction
-Suppression of AV conduction in the heart, respiratory depression
-Diarrhea ( oral MG)
-flaccid paralysis
Magnesium Sulfate severe complications?
-Hypermagnesmia
-Iv MG can cause hypotension and cardiac arrest
Magnesium Sulfate contraindications
-Pregnancy ( avoid admin within 2 hrs of delivery)
-with patients who have a AV block
-rectal bleeed
-N/V,Abdominal pain
-Use in caution for people with renal and cardiac disease
-Hypermagnesmia
-Caution in pt with CNS depression ( can enhance sedation)
-Monitor when use for eclampsia to avoid toxicity
Magnesium Sulfate Interactions?
-decreases the absorption of tetracycline and digoxin
Magnesium Sulfate pt education?
-teach pt to each a source of MG ( legumes, leafy greens, nuts, bananas)
-IV MG infuse slowly to avoid hypotension or cardiac complications
-assess and monitor for signs of toxicity ( hypotension, respiratory depression
monitor for hypermagnesmia ( arrhythmia)
Magnesium Sulfate dose?
10-30 g with 8 oz of water a day
