- Prevents neural tube defects that can occur in early pregnancy

-Safe for pregnancy
-Avoid indiscriminate use of Folic Acid to reduce the risk of masking manifestations of B12 deficiency

- allergic reaction ( Anaohylaxis)
- Can mask Vit B12 deficiency symptoms

-can decrease by methotrexate and sulfonamides

-Can decrease phenytoin blood levels due to increased metabolism

-Intake food high in folic acid ( liver, leafy greens, citric fruits, bean, peas)

-Monitor for risk indicating that folic acid is needed ( child bearing age, heavy alcohol use)
