Ferrous Sulfate therapeutic use
-treat and prevent iron deficency anemia
-prevent iron deficient anemia for pt at increase risk (infants, pregnancy, children)
Ferrous Sulfate Pharmacological action?
-Provides iron needed for RBC development and oxygen transport to cells
Ferrous Sulfate Complications?
-Gi distress ( Nausea, constipation, heart burn)
-Anaphylaxis’s
-Hypotension
-Staining of skin and other -tissues using IM injections
-Teeth staining with liquid form
When is Ferrous Sulfate fatal to children?
-When they ingest 2-10 grams
Ferrous Sulfate Contraindications and precautions?
-pregnancy and lactation
-previous hypersensitivity to iron
-Oral preparation’s should be used with caution for pt with peptic ulcer disease, ulcerative colitis, severe liver disease
-antacids or tetracyclines reduce absorption
Ferrous Sulfate Interactions?
-caffeine and dairy products interfere with absorption
-food reduces absorption but reduces gastric distress
Ferrous Sulfate pt education?
-Take iron 1 hr before meals
-anticipate harmless dark green/black stool
-intake foods with high amounts of iron (liver, yeast, grains, leafy greens)
-vitamin C increases absorption but also increase GI complications
Ferrous Sulfate dosage?
300-325mg daily
