Machine - Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the 3 major pressure units (PSI)?
- PSI, PSIg, PSIa
What is PSI?
Pounds per square inch
What is PSIg?
Pounds per square inch gauge.
What is PSIa?
Pounds per square inch absolute.
PSIg is the difference between which two pressures?
measured pressure and surrounding atmospheric pressure
PSIa is based on the reference point of what?
zero pressure for a perfect vacume.
PSIg + atmospheric pressure =
PSIa
What are the features of the gas supply?
- connections 2. components 3. sizes & contents 4. markings 5. use
What are the features of the pipeline?
1 components 2. problems
Most common cylinder?
E
3 less common gasses that are provided in cylinders
- helium 2. heliox 3. carbon dioxide.
These 3 common gasses can hook up to the machine at which outlet?
common gas outlet
Valve stem?
located on superior portion of cylinder.
Valve outlet?
gas outlet port
index holes?
connector ports locking cylinder to pins.
Cylinder valve
portion superior to gas tank.
Yoke
bracket on back of machine
index pins?
(on anesth machine) connect to index holes.
T handle?
(on anesth machine) clamps on cylinder. Locking it in place. Handle.
PISS acronym
Pin Index Safety System
What is the PISS?
Method of ensuring the index pins match up to a speecific tank. Safety mechanism.
Installing an E cylinder (steps)
- place gasket over yoke inlet. 2. align holes in the cylinder valve with pins on yoke. 3 push cylinder forward and into yoke. 4. rotate yoke arm upwards and over until the arm engages with other side of yoke. 5. turn t-handle clockwise until it is tight and holds the cylinder firmly in place. 6. To open cylinder, turn the cylinder valve at least one to two turns counterclockwise using a cylinder wrench.
Why do we turn off the O2 cylinder?
- to preserve 02 sensor 2. to eliminate silent depletion.
When do we replace the O2 cylinder?
WHen <500PSI
What PSI is the cylinder regulator set to?
45psi
What PSI is the wall regularotr set to?
50psi
What is the PSI restriction of the pressure relief valve?
75psi
Order of tanks from smallest to largest?
B D E M G H
What is heliox used for?
foreign object obstruction

Which two gasses exist in a gas/liquid state?
N20 and CO2
At what point does N20 become solely gaseous?
745PSI and 300L
Pipeline PSIg pressure?
50
Which pipeline gas is provided using multiple cylinders?
N2O
What does DISS stand for?
Diameter Index Safety System
Which is more prone to leaks, DISS or PISS?
DISS
What’s a common problem with DISS systems (besides leaks)?
DISS can be “hacked’” to connect to any connector and they’re not standardized.
A function of shutoff valves is that they isolate specific piping system areas without turning off what
the entire/rest of the system
What are two pipeline alarms?
- Master Alarm System and 2. Area (local) alarm System
What is the Master Alarm System?
- monitors central supply & distribution
What is the area (local) alarm system?
- measures only a specific area.
Do area alarm systems go through the anesthesia machine?
No
