Policymaking Strategies

Prepare a Scientific and Evidence Base
- Study the issue, target audience, and the environment
- Identify the need for the policy or legislation
Develop Broad Support
- Form an alliance with groups like researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, religious groups, etc. who can assist and support the issue
- Be proactive & network with nutrition experts, influential citizens in the community, etc.
Analyze the Opposition
- Policy makers need to hear strong factual arguments that refute the opponent’s position
- Constructive responses can contribute to the success of a policy
Develop Alternative Approaches or Compromise Positions
Listen to and analyze the opposition’s viewpoint and give an alternative solution
Estimate Needed Resources
- Determine the expenses involved in carrying out a legislative campaign
- Expenses have to be paid - the nutritionist or policy maker must solicit the support of community members who are interested in the issue such as special interest groups
Adopt Successful Strategies from Others
- It’s helpful for the policy maker to identify and learn the successful strategies used by other healthcare professionals and interest groups
- Reduces costs and save time
- Review existing and established policy constantly to ensure that it is addressing the objectives of the program
Set a Clear Direction Before Starting
- Establish points for possible compromise early
- Changes may be made throughout the process
- Work with people that are responsible for implementing the program and those affected by the policy
Legislative Network Coordinator (LNC)
Volunteer position where nutritionists can become more involved in public policy work
Grassroots Liaison (GRL)
- Volunteer position that is elected by each state affiliate
- They organize and mobilize AND members at the state level to become involved in federal public policy issues
Political Action Committee (PAC)
Group of individuals united by similar interests
Farm Bill
Protects vital nutrition assistance programs and includes initiatives that will improve the health of the nation
