What were the 2 main changes Henry VIII brought with his government?

A
  • Henry only called parliament 9 time throughout his reign with many of them concentrated at the beginning and end of his reign as in the beginning he was getting rid of previous policies and later in his reign he became overly obsessed with invading France.
  • Cardinal Worsley became a strong political figure and was the person Henry relied on him and influence decision making. Henrys close minions distrusted Worsley as he wanted to neutralise their influence.

What were the key features of the Kings Great Matter?

  • In the mid-1520s henry was becoming dissatisfied with his marriage as Catherine couldn’t produce a male heir.
  • Henry required Wolsey to acquire papal dispensation (get approval from the Pope) for an annulment – but henry previously got papal dispensation to marry Catherine of Aragon his brother’s widow
  • This meant Wolsey had to get the pope to go back on what he previously said.

  • The fall of Worsley was because he couldn’t secure the king’s great matter which increased the Kings frustration
  • The pope sent cardinal Campeggio who refused the annulment sealing Worsley’s fate. - execution

  • Divorce from Catherine of Aragon
  • Pressurise the Pope = in 1531 clergy accused of praminurie (being a leader against the crown) and were fined, in 1532 the act in conditional restraint of annates (churches collecting taxes for Pope), 1532 house of commons supplication against the ordinaries, 1532 formal submission of clergy.
  • Henrys marriage to Anne Boleyn, as they had had sexual relations

  • The act of restraint of appeals meant Catherine of Aragon couldn’t appeal the annulment
  • Act of succession
  • Act of supremacy stated henry was the head of the church of England
  • Treason act stopped people speaking out
  • The act annexing first fruits and tenths of the crown = stopped annates going to the pope and instead went to the Crown.

  • She was a very outspoken and politically minded women so was responsible for pushing the King in a protestant direction
  • Relations with her and Cromwell pubically broke down and Cromwell felt threatened
  • He along with conservatives had her executed due to adultery and incest
