What measures were taken to create a more unified state?
- The laws of Wales Act 1536 – incorporated Wales into England with little separate identity
- A similar thing was done with northern counties like Cheshire, Durham and Lancashire - The act resuming liberties of the crown 1536
What 3 ways are evidence that society changed under Henry VIII?
- Poverty
- Dissolution monasteries
- major rebellions
What were the main features of poverty under Henry VIII?
- His aggressive war policies angered people as amicable grant was granted to fund it
-Real wages went down, and enclosure meant there was less work of people and less food
-In 23 yrs the population went from 2.3 to 2.8 million
-Currency lost value due to debasement of coinage
How did the dissolution of the monasteries show changes in society under Henry VIII?
- Dissolution of monasteries – confiscation to take their wealth, the crown raised 1.3 million in doing this
- But 1547 the crown had to sell 2/3 of land for money
How did rebellions show social change under Henry VIII?
At this time people were angry due to the amicable grant to fund foreign wars, 4000 people rebelled in Essex
The 2 main rebellions were the Lincolnshire rising and pilgrimage of grace:
- Caused by economic grievances. Angered due to the death of Catherine of Aragon and Charles Brandon being sent to govern
- Both rebellions were easily dealt with but were eye opening for Henry as he ignored the warning signs.
