What’s the differences between Scholasticism and Humanism?
- Scholasticism = educate clergy so they can educate people, to learn from the church. Humans can only learn teachings from the church
- Humanism = all people including peasants should be educated, through education humans can improve the world
How did Humanism influence education and culture under Henry VII?
Education:
- John Colet helped change school’s curriculum to humanist principles
- Universities like oxford began to adopt more Platonist educational principles
Culture:
- In society there were renaissance ideas in England, more and more people becoming influenced
- Sculptures became more common, and architecture
- However, Nonsuch palace is an example where henry was still influenced by gothic architecture
What were the main 3 criticisms of the pre - reformation church?
- Corruption – embezzlement with Cardinal Wolsey
- Anticlericalism – clergymen misused their privileges
- Declining monetarism – lost sense of direction and large amount of resources
How do doctrines show church changes under Henry VIII?
- 1536 – ten articles got rid of 4 of the 7 sacraments
- 1537 – bishops’ book – brings back 4 but at lower status
- 1539 – six articles act – said transubstantiation is true
- 1543 – kings’ book – all 7 sacraments are brought back to same status
How do practises show the church changing under Henry VIII?
- 1536 – first royal injunctions – ordered church to change practises, holidays
- 1538 – second royal injunctions – implemented the 10 articles
- 1539 – first great bible – bible is translated to English
- 1543 – act of advancement of true religion – only upper class could read bible
How does the structure of the church show the church changing under Henry VIII?
- 1535 Valor Ecclesiasticus – survey to see how wealthy people are
- 1536 – first act of suppression – confiscated land and capital from monasteries under £200
- 1539 – second act of suppression – king angry at rebellions so closes all monasteries
