-owned by celtics then King John for 300 years
-at the end of the 16th century, it opened for farming and small scale industry eg water power from dammed stream
-during industrial revolution, copper works and a ceramics factory was developed
-flour milling and brewery created to serve the growing population
-attractive greenfeild site for property developers who built for the growing middle class
-cheap housing developments were made due to lack of space- urban sprawl
