Lymphoid organs Flashcards
Located in LUQ of abdomen, protected by ribs 9–11 → Filters blood and mounts immune response to encapsulated organisms → Important in asplenia
Spleen
Contains T cells; located within white pulp of spleen
Periarteriolar lymphatic sheath (PALS)
Contains B cells; located within white pulp of spleen
Follicle
Contains macrophages and specialized B cells in spleen; captures antigens between red and white pulp
Marginal zone
Immune organ where T cell differentiation and maturation occurs; derived from third pharyngeal pouch
Thymus
Neoplasm of thymus associated with myasthenia gravis and other syndromes
Thymoma
Lymph node cluster draining lungs
Hilar
Lymph node cluster draining lateral side of dorsolateral foot
Popliteal
Lymph node cluster draining testes and ovaries
Para-aortic
Lymph node cluster draining skin below umbilicus (except popliteal area)
Superficial inguinal
Lymph node cluster draining cervix, proximal vagina, and body of uterus
Internal iliac
Lymph node cluster draining anal canal below pectinate line
Superficial inguinal
Site of B-cell localization and proliferation in lymph node
Follicle
Contains medullary cords and sinuses; communicates with efferent lymphatics
Medulla (of lymph node)
Region of lymph node containing T cells; located between follicles and medulla
Paracortex
Enlarges in extreme immune response, underdeveloped in DiGeorge syndrome
Paracortex
Primary follicles are dense and inactive; secondary follicles are active
