Lymphocyte & Monocyte Disorders Flashcards
Infectious Mononucleosis
Caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
Patients are positive for the heterophile antibody test
Can produce anti-i antibody that results in hemolytic anemia
Infectious Mono Labs
Elevated WBC, >20% atypical lymphs
Usually >50% total lymphs
Mild thrombocytopenia
Elevated CRP/ALT/AST
Infectious Mono Diagnosis
Use serological tests
VIral capsid antigen for IgM, VCA for IgG, heterophile antibodies, EBV nuclear antigen antibodies
Infectious Lymphocytosis
Caused by Coxsackie virus
Elevated WBC, 60 to 95% normal mature lymphs, no atypical lymphs
Whooping Cough
Caused by Bordetella pertussis infection (gram-negative coccobacillus)
WBC elevated, 70 to 90% lymphs
Small mature lymphs, some with cleaving in the nucleus
