Where are peyer’s patches located?
Small Intestine
What are the function of peyer’s patches?
Capture and destroy bacteria in the intestines
What is the nonspecific body defense known as complement?
proteins in the body that poke a hole in the foreign body
What is edema?
swelling due to accumulation of ISF
What is Albumin?
- important protein for returning fluid back into the capillaries
- low levels can cause edema
Primary Lymphedema
Lymph vessel or lymph node development has been impaired (usually since a child)
Secondary Lymphedema
Lymphatic system is damaged usually from an injury
Does the R or L subclavian vein collect more?
The left collects more. The right only collects from the right top of head to the bottom of right trunk.
Lymphadenopathy
“swollen glands” - do not really use this official term
Is there a cure for lymphedema?
No but trmt and therapy exist
What is pitted edema?
- sign of lymphedema
- due to accumulation of thick proteins in interstitial space
- returns to pre-pit w/in 30 seconds
Can there be sensory impairment with lymphedema?
Yes
What is retrograde massage?
Massage from distal to proximal in circular motion
