Lymphatic System Flashcards
What does the Lymphatic System handle?
Excess water and debris
The system plays a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance in the body.
What is the function of vessels in the Lymphatic System?
Pumps water up to the shoulder
These vessels are critical for transporting lymph fluid throughout the body.
What role do lymph nodes play in the Lymphatic System?
Act as water treatment plants
Lymph nodes filter lymph fluid and help the immune system by producing immune cells.
What do special immune cells in the Lymphatic System do?
Recognize and destroy foreign debris
These immune cells are essential for protecting the body against infections and diseases.
What happens during an infection in the Lymphatic System?
Pumping breaks down, causing swelling (lymphedema)
This condition can lead to significant discomfort and complications if not addressed.
Where is the lymphatic system located?
Lymph nodes are located in the neck, groin and armpits
Lymph vessels
Capillaries and veins with valves to prevent backflow of lymph fluid
Lymph nodes
Collection of lymph tissue that forms swellings that produce and store lymphoctyes which cleanses the lymph fluid
Lymphoid organs (spleen)
The spleen filters out and cleanses blood of pathogens
Destroys worn out RBC’s
Stores platelets
Lymphoid organs (thymus gland)
Site of T-cell maturation
Lymphoid organs (tonsils)
Trap and remove bacteria entering the throat
Lymphoid organs (peyer patches)
Prevents bacteria from entering the intestinal walls
Lymph fluid
Is the fluid collected by lymph vessels
Thoraic duct
Serves lower extremities, abdomen and left side of head/neck/left arm
Right lymphatic duct
Serves right arm, right side of head, neck and right thoracic area
