Fetal Circulation Flashcards
Where does exchange of nutrients take place
At the placenta
Placenta
Large disk of tissue attached to the uterus wall where the mom and baby’s blood vessels are right next to each other
Allows for nutrient, waste and gas exchange
Umbilical cord consists of 3 blood vessels
2 umbilical arteries and 1 umbilical vein
2 umbilical arteries bring?
Deoxygenated blood from baby to placenta
Umbilical vein
Blood leaves placenta via umbilical vein
Carries nutrient rich and oxygenated blood to the fetus
Joins with venous duct which merges with the inferior vena cava to return blood to heart
Oval opening
-opening between 2 atria
-blood pumps from right to left atria and bypasses pulmonary circuit
Arterial duct
-blood vessel that connects pulmonary artery with the aorta
-allows blood to bypass pulmonary circuit
Common cardiac defects
Oval opening fails to close:
-causes pulmonary congestion and failure of right ventricle
-a “blue” baby (lack of O2)
