lymphatic system Flashcards
Lymph
plasma that has left the blood, went to the space between cells and entered the lymphatic capillaries.
Where do lymphatic capillaries carry lymph to?
lymph vessels
Where do lymphatic vessels carry lymph to?
lymph nodes
what are lymph nodes
Small, bean-like structure
Macrophages and T cells are found in high concentrations in the nodes. Macrophages digest any pathogens in lymph as it sits in the node and lymphocytes can start an immune response
Lymph enters the node….
afferent vessels
Lymph exits the node….
efferent vessels
There are more _____ vessels than ____ vessels
what does this cause
afferent vessels than efferent
lymph pools –> This gives more time for macrophages and B cells to clean the fluid.
Efferent lymphatic vessels….
lymphatic trunks
Lymphatic trunks deliver lymph to
lymphatic collecting ducts.
- two major collections ducts, 1 left and right
Collecting ducts empty into the bloodstream
Thymus
Thymus is an organ of lymphatic system located just above the heart and around the trachea.
-T cells mature in the Thymus.
Spleen
largest lymphatic organ.
-It’s located in the ULQ and is filled with blood, macrophages, and lymphocytes. It filters blood in a similar way to lymph nodes filtering lymph. It also removes worn out RBC from the blood.
-If the spleen is injured or diseased, a splenectomy may be done and the liver will take over most of its functions.
