lymphatic system Flashcards
lymph
drains interstitial fluid, transports dietary lipids and facilitates immune responses
wheres does lymph flow
in lymphatic vessels, tissue and red bone marrow
where do lymphocytes form and mature
primary lymphatic organs where the mature into B or T cells
what are primary lymphatic organs
red bone marrow and thymus gland
B vs T cells
B cells will mature into bone marrow and T cells will go mature in the thymus
secondary lymphatic organs
where lymphocytes will activate and monitoring center of extracellular fluids
lymphatic system functions
fluid balance, fat absorption, houses defenses, transports oxygen antibodies hormones nutrients lymphocytes and removes metabolic waste from cells. prevents foreign microbe invasion
lymph node functions
remove foreign materials from the body such as bacteria and tumor cells and produce lymphocytes
where are lymph nodes found
deep and superficial throughout the body
lymphatic trunks
empty into lymphatic ducts (right or thoracic)
right lymphatic duct
drains lymph from the right arm and right side of head & thorax
thoracic duct
receives lymph from the rest of the body and empties lymph into the subclavian vein
spleen location and function
found under the diaphragm, destroys worn out RBCs
filters lymph, cleanses blood and provides a site for lymphocyte proliferation
largest lymphatic organ in the body
spleen
