chapter 13 pt.2 Flashcards
nerve plexus
complex, interwoven network of nerve fibers formed by anterior rami
what are the four nerve plexuses and what do they do
brachial, lumbar, cervical, sacral and they control skeletal muscles in the neck and limbs
what is the major nerve of the cervical plexus
phrenic nerve
reflexes
rapid and automatic responses to specific stimuli
- help to maintain homeostasis
- integration occurs in gray matter of the spinal cord
reflex arc
sensory receptor, sensory neuron, integration center, motor neuron, effector
cervical plexus
supplies skin and muscles of the head, neck and upper shoulders
exclude T2-T12
brachial plexus
the upper extremities and neck/shoulder muscles
lumbar plexus
anterolateral abdominal wall, external genitals and lower extremities
contains the femoral nerve, largest nerve
sacral plexus
buttocks, perineum and lower extremeties
sciatic nerve is the largest nerve
erb duchene palsy
waiter’s tip palsy, ulnar and radial injuries, wrist drop, claw hand and winged scapula
dermatomes
a specific area of the skin that one spinal nerve innervates and they carry somatic sensory nerve impulses to the brain
how does information travel in the spinal cord?
white matter tracts conduct nerve impulses to and from the brain
gray matter receives and integrates incoming and outgoing information for spinal reflexes
which matter surrounds the central canal?
grey matter
reciprocal innervation
skeletal muscles in antagonistic pairs
stretch reflex
- controls muscle length by causing muscle contraction
- maintaining muscle tone and coordination during exercise
