Lymphatic system Flashcards
organisation of lymphatic system
lymph, lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, lymphoid or lymphatic organs, lymphoid tissues
layout of a lymph node
mass of lymphatic tissue surrounded by a fibrous capsule. always connected to an incoming afferent or outgoing efferent lymph vessel
functions of a lymph
tissue drainage and return of plasma proteins, immune function, transport of fat from gut
how is lymphatic fluid returned to venous circulation
initially drainage is symmetrical then it splits and drains via thoracic duct and right lymphatic duct (right upper side of body). emptied into venous system at the jugular/ subclavian junction
functions of a lymph node
important for starting immune response.
what is lymph made up of
fluid and plasma proteins only but gains lymphocytes through lymphatic capillaries. fats added in small intestine
what is a lymph node
secondary lymphoid tissue
pathology of lymph node
lymphomas, tuberculosis, glandular fever, inflammatory hyperplasia
largest lymphatic organ
spleen. contains large amount of blood, routinely discharged via smooth muscle action
