External heart anatomy Flashcards
lateral to heart is
pleura and phrenic nerves
inferior to heart is
central tendon of the diaphragm
heart lies antertior to vertebrae
T5-T8
superior border has
auricles and great vessels
right border has and goes from and to
right atrium, rib 3 to rib 6
left border has and goes from and to
left ventricle, rib 2 to rib 5
inferior border has
right atrium, right ventricle, left ventricle
posterior surface has
left atrium
inferior (diaphragmatic) surface has
right ventricle and left ventricle
anterior (sternocostal) surface has
1/3 RA, 2/3 RV and LV
fibrous pericardia
dense connective tissue sac
serous pericardia
visceral and parietal. filled with fluid in between -pericardial cavity
right coronary artery
arises from right aortic sinus of ascending aorta and runs in coronary sulcus. at inferior margin of heart it gives off a right marginal artery and on post surface of heart gives off post descending artery
left coronary artery
arises from left aortic sinus of ascending aorta runs in coronary sulcus divides almost immediately into left anterior descending artery (in inter ventricular sulcus) and circumflex artery
anastomoses
anterior and posterior descending
left circumflex artery supplies
left atrium and left ventricle
left anterior descending artery supplies
right ventricle, left ventricle and inter ventricular septum
left marginal artery supplies
left ventricle
right marginal artery supplies
right ventricle and the apex
right coronary artery supplies
right atrium and right ventricle
great cardiac vein
lies alongside anterior interventricular artery
middle cardiac vein
lies alongside posterior inter ventricular artery
small cardiac vein
lies alongside right marginal artery
all cardiac veins ( apart from anterior cardiac vein) drain into
coronary sinus lying alongside the circumflex artery (anterior cardiac vein drains into right atrium directly)
coronary sinus drains into
right atrium
phrenic nerve innervates
the fibrous pericardium and parietal layer of serous pericardium, carries pain sensation
vagus nerve innervates
heart and visceral layer of pericardium
sympathetic nerves
cervical and upper thoracic ganglia T1-4 innervate heart and visceral layer of serous pericardium (referred pain to inner surface of upper arm)
inherent rate of contraction is set by
purkinje cells found in the SA node but this can be altered from outwith the heart by the ANS
