Lymphatic And Immune System Flashcards
The complex collection of cells and organs that destroys or neutralizes pathogens that would otherwise cause disease or death
Immune system
The system of vessels, cells, and organs that carries excess fluids to the bloodstream and filters pathogens from the blood
Lymphatic system
Also called the terminal lymphatics.
Are vessels where interstitial fluid enters the lymphatic system to become lymph
Lymphatic Capillaries
Are types of leukocytes (WBC) that represent the primary cells of the immune system
Lymphocytes
Has two main types of Lymphocytes
B cells
T cells
Originate and mature in the bone marrow. Involved in humoral immunity, as they produce antibodies in response to foreign antigens
B cells
Involved in cell-mediated immunity in response to intracellular pathogens (bacteria, virus, parasites), tumor cells, surgical implants
T cells
Parts of Lymphatic System
Primary Lymphoid Organs
Secondary Lymphoid Organs
Primary Lymphoid Organs
Bone Marrow
Thymus
Secondary Lymphoid Organs
Spleen
Lymph Nodes
Tonsils
Appendix
Peyer’s patches
Mucous membranes
Takes over most hematopoietic functions
Bone Marrow
A bilobed organ found in the space between the sternum and the aorta of the heart. It makes white blood cells, called lymphocytes, which protects the body against infections.
Thymus
Small bean-shaped tissues found along the lymphatic vessels
Lymph nodes
Act as a large lymph node
Filtering blood and trapping antigens
Spleen
Location at the throat and palate
Can stop germs entering the body through the mouth or the nose
Tonsils
