Lymphatic and Immune System Flashcards
Components of Lymphatic System - works with immune system - 7
Thymus
Spleen largest organ
Lymph nodes
Lymph nodes
interstitial fluid
adenoid
stonsils
Immune System
protects against pathogens
Pathogen
disease causing organism or virus
Bacteria, fungi, virus toxins, parasites, cancer
Lymphatic System
network of connecting vessels that lymph flows thru
lymphatic vessels, lymph capillaries, lymph nodes
Functions of lymph syste
collects fluid
starts immune response
delivers the fluid
removes pathogens
Lymph nodes - about
small glandular structures
located in neck, axilla and groin
produces and stores lymphocytes
enlarged in infections
Lymph nodules - about
masses of tissue in lymph nodes that contain macrophages and lymph nodes
also in spleen and tonsils
Thymus - about
located posterior to sternum
functions to make lymphocyte called Tcells
Assists with production of lymphocytes for childs immune system
when immune system becomes functional the thymus becomes non existent
Spleen
largest lymphatic organ
upper left quadrant
Tissue fluid and Lymph
interstitial fluid in spaces between cells
Lymph fluid moves by
squeezing action of skeletal muscles
Inflammation
first response to pathogen immune system is activated
Antigens
foreign molecules that are recognized by the immune system
T cells
fighter cells, attack cells
B cells
make antibodies
Vaccines give body…
virus so Tcells attack and Bcells make antibodies
Natural aquired immunity
natural exposure to antigen; body makes antibodies against disease
Artifical Aquired Immunity - passive
immunity develops due to medical intervention - vaccine
Injected with pathogen and body makes antibodies and B cells (memory)
Natural Acquired Passive Immunity
Antibodies passed along thru placenta from mother to child
Articially Aquired Passive Immunity
Patient injected with antibodies or infusion made by someone else (Monoclonal antibodies)
Anaphylaxis
Life threatening allergic response requires epinephrine
Autoimmune disease
immune system mistakenly attacks body
immune system mistakes part of body as foreign
examples of autoimmune disease
Graves Disease
Lupus
MS
RA
Type 1 Diabetes
Guillian barr syndrome
Immunocompetent
Normal functioning immune system
Immunodeficient, immunocompromised, immunosupressed
body’s ability to fight disease is compromised or absent
Opportunistic infections
opens body up to infections a normal immune system would be able to fight off
AIDS - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
Destroys T Cells
Lymphadema
blockage of lymphatic vessels resulting in tissue swelling
Mononucleosis
Contagious viral infection cause by Epstein Barr virus
Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus (SLE) - 7
Women more than men
Butterfly rash on face
Anemia
Fatigue
joint pain
fever
organ damage
Celiac disease
chronic digestive and immune disorder damages small intestine
headache, fatigue, abdominal pain afte gluten, weight loss, diarrhea, constipation, foul smelling stools
Antigen
foreign substance body does not recognize
