What does fail passive mean?

A

A single failure will lead to autopilot disconnection but does not leave the aircraft significantly out of trim. Landing must be manual.

What does fail operational mean?

A

A failure of a system will subsequently leave the aircraft in a fail passive condition. If it fails below AH then the landing can be continued by the remaining part of the automatic system.
